This picturesque Augustinian priory was built in 1236 by the papal chaplain, Master Lawrence of St Nicholas, who sold 600 sheep to pay for its construction works! Dissolved in 1536 by Henry VIII, it passed through several private hands including Thomas Hobson, and later, Sir George Downing.
