The Meetings Show’s marketing director secures a place in micebook’s Power 50: Green Champions

The Meetings Show’s portfolio marketing director, Alex Softley, has secured a coveted place in micebook’s Power 50: Green Champions. His name now appears alongside an elite group of industry professionals who have been recognised for devoting their time, passion and energy to making a positive impact on the planet. Alex’s determination to drive positive change in the business meetings and events industry has seen him spearhead The Complete Sustainable Events Course – a six-week CPD accredited virtual course – in partnership with experts isla and Andy King of Netflix’s Fyre Festival fame. With a fantastic Net Promoter Score of +41 it has already successfully seen over 200 events professionals learn how to put sustainability at the heart of their planning and empowered them to measure the environmental impact of their events while considering the opportunities for leaving a positive legacy. The course, which allows event professionals to study at a time and pace suitable to them wherever they are in the world, has just recommenced with its third cohort. Such is the demand, there are plans to run another edition in the new year. While Alex’s objective of creating a positive impact is being realised one student at a time – it hasn’t stopped there. Through his dedicated efforts, he has championed sustainability across The Meetings Show’s parent company, Northstar Travel Group UK, ensuring that its commitment to sustainable practices extends beyond the course itself. Isla has since become a strategic partner of The Meetings Show, supporting the development of their sustainability strategy to help the group achieve its pledge to reach Net Zero by 2050 and cutting carbon emissions by 50% by 2030. This has seen several sustainability measures being implemented and Alex working closely with their events and operations team setting clear goals for continuous improvement year after year. Elsewhere, The Meetings Show’s framework is now being used as a blueprint for sustainability initiatives across the wider Northstar Travel Group.  Alex Softley, portfolio marketing director for Northstar Travel Group, said: “It is such an honour to appear on micebook’s Power 50: Green Champions list. From realising that many in the business meetings and events sector were struggling with the know how to take a truly strategic and authentic approach to their sustainability efforts, it has been an entire team effort gaining support and momentum to launch and run the course. It is wonderful that our efforts have been formerly recognised and more importantly that change is being driven across the industry.” The micebook Power 50: Green Champions were revealed at a special event held on 10 October at the Barbican, which brought together industry professionals and thought leaders for an afternoon of inspiration, education and celebration.

10 Easy Changes Venues Can Make to Be More ‘Green’

The journey towards carbon neutrality or ‘being green’ can be a long one, but don’t be daunted by the length of the road ahead. Easy steps can make a big difference, so here’s a list of 10 changes you can implement without too much cost or disruption that will put you a few steps further forward. Some you may be doing already, but hopefully there are some new ideas for you too.1. Compost all food waste (the local council will most likely offer a service)2. Operate a ‘lights off’ policy when rooms are not in use3. Where possible use locally based support services with green credentials4. Create a green team from people at all levels of seniority to champion environmental issues5. Maximise use of natural light (book out those rooms with the most natural light first)6. Offer food that is locally sourced and sustainable7. Minimise packaging on the food and drinks you buy and supply 8. Promote your venue digitally, reducing the need for print and fuel-using physical distribution9. Eliminate paper based delegate registration10. Provide white boards in preference to flipcharts and if using flipcharts, use both sidesShare and share alikeOh and don’t forget number 11, share what you have learned. Ideas to reduce your carbon footprint shouldn’t be kept to yourself, this isn’t about competitive advantage, it’s about saving the planet. Ideas are more effective when shared. To view Sustainable Venues for your event click here
